Chapter 13

Zurian

After asking me all about power hookups on the Sola—there were none—Bryn reluctantly left her blasters behind with the shelter. There was no place to charge them, making them useless to trek across the land with. There was no missing the fact that she looked unsure without them, as if an extension of herself had been removed. Even with all my Destran fighters, Bryn had kept that last blaster nearby. She did this even though it was on its last whiff of power and she admitted that it had maybe one shot left in it.

I got it. She didn’t like to feel defenseless. Neither did I. She didn’t like relying on anyone else for her safety. We had that in common, too. But she was beginning to trust me, and by extension my people, who had left home on my orders, despite reservations about the excursion. Now they were returning with positive feelings for Bryn. Her device cured our sick. She would come to my Sola a hero.

Even Laskos admired her, and that was saying a lot. If he hadn’t, he would have killed that furry white beast without hesitation, no matter her protests. Bryn had earned a good deal of respect. That pleased me a great deal, because I intended to see that she lived in my Sola for the rest of her days, with me. Mating marks or not, I considered her my mate. She would not know hardship again. At least, after the mountain of problems we faced were resolved.

I watched her look back one last time at the shelter she’d called home for many days. I wondered what she thought of it—if she was happy to leave it or had misgivings. I couldn’t blame her for either.

I took her hand in mine and we walked together. She looked healthier than she had when I arrived the second time, with my Destrans. Warm color flushed her cheeks. The hollows of her face had filled out with a more substantial diet. And perhaps hope had sparked a light in her eyes as well—hope that she wouldn’t die with the mangled ship she’d arrived on.

I thought it was adorable that she brought her blanket and pillow, as if unsure whether we had such luxuries. I didn’t bother to tell her that we did. She would find that out for herself. The day stretched into night and we walked in the darkness until the people needed rest.

We camped among the trees with only the most basic tents above us and built a fire in a clearing. Meat, smoked and cured at Bryn’s camp, was handed out all around.

I sat beside the fire on a thick, wide mat with Bryn. We leaned our backs against a solid crate and listened as my fighters told stories. Some were funnier than others, but all were entertaining. I could feel Bryn’s body sink against mine as she relaxed and began to enjoy herself. Every time she laughed, a shiver wove through me like liquid need.
